I found this really great article (and here's Part 2) written by Eugene S. Melchionne, a Connecticut Consumer Attorney. (A Consumer Attorney deals with debtor and creditor law.) It's good to read something like this from a Consumer Attorney. He really deals with helping clients pick up the pieces after it is too late. He's advising people to plan for taking care of debt, so that their loved ones don't have to suffer the consequences. There are several different tools that you can use to plan so that your loved ones aren't left high and dry. Two that immediately come to mind are Life Insurance and a Revocable Living Trust. If you have a lot of debt that could put your family in the poorhouse if you pass away too early, talk to your attorney about these possibilities.
