A few weeks ago, I attended an all-day seminar on the subject of Estate Administration and Probate. It is an annual seminar held by the Oregon Law Institute. Lawyers in Oregon are required to continue their education, with a minimum of 15 credit hours per year in bar-approved seminars.
Of course, I learned a lot at this seminar, but sometimes you learn more from the personal stories than you do from the actual learning materials.
One of the speakers, who had been presenting at this seminar for several years, told us how his mother had died that year, and how even though he'd been involved in the estate planning field for so long, it had all taken on a new meaning for him this year.
He now sees what it is like to be a grieving client. Luckily, his best friend of 30 years is his attorney. He spoke about how important is has been for him to have his friend there, someone who he knows that cares about him and is totally competent. He asked us all to please remember the emotional element when dealing with our clients.
That made me think of you, the Client. It also made me think about your family. Do you have someone to turn to when your loved one dies? Does your family have someone to turn to when you die? It's so important to build that relationship now, while you're young and healthy. You don't want to have to get to know an attorney when you're grieving and vulnerable.
To your family's health & prosperity,
P.S. Want to get started on the most important planning you'll ever do for your family? Give our office a call at (503) 235-5150 to get started. You'll be glad you did.
